Rising star maestro Nicolas Ellis makes his long awaited SSO debut in an unforgettable night of iconic music.
Beethoven’s 5th Symphony has stopped audiences in their tracks since its premiere. Timelessly arresting and bursting with passion and energy, the 5th Symphony bursts open with the four most memorable notes in all of music. Paired with the work is Jeder Baum spricht by Iranian-Canadian composer Iman Habibi. The work is inspired by the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.
Saskatoon pianist Jerry Hu won the 2021 Saskatchewan Music Festival Shurniak Concerto Competition, and now he makes his SSO debut with Beethoven’s 3rd Piano Concerto.

[box]Nicolas Ellis is the Artistic Director, Conductor and Founder of the Orchestre de l’Agora and currently serves as Artistic Partner to the Orchestre Métropolitain and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Mr. Ellis has been invited as guest conductor with Les Violons du Roy, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Orchestre de chambre I Musici de Montréal, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, the Orchestre Métropolitain, Symphony Nova Scotia, the Orchestre classique de Montréal, the Ottawa Symphony, the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens.
He also regularly collaborates with the Opéra de Montréal’s Atelier lyrique. During the 2021-2022 season, in addition to his guest conducting engagements, he will act as Assistant conductor at the Opéra Comique in Paris for conductor Raphaël Pichon and the Ensemble Pygmalion, on a new production of Fidelio (Fall 2021). In January 2022, he will also act as Cover conductor to Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra for recordings which will be released under the label Deutsche Grammophon. [/box]
Jerry Hu
[box]Jerry Hu is a 16-year-old pianist from Saskatoon. He has studied piano under Bonnie Nicholson for many years and has been honoured with many awards for his excellent performances. Recently, he was chosen as the top senior pianist at the 2019 SMFA Provincial Music Festival and placed second overall in the senior piano discipline at the FCMF National Music Festival held later that year. Jerry has also had the opportunity to study under renowned pianists such as Jan Lisiecki, Ian Parker, Peter Miyamoto, and Natalie Zhu. Jerry was the winner of the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association’s 2021 Shurniak Concerto Competition with his performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto in B flat Major No. 1, Op. 23. Jerry received the first prize of $2,000 and the opportunity to be a featured soloist in an upcoming season with the Regina Symphony Orchestra and the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra.[/box]
