How to SSO

Never been to the SSO?  We want you to make the most of your night at the symphony – so we bring you How To SSO!

Make it a special night on the town and dine before the performance at a nearby restaurant.  Arrive at TCU Place a bit early for a pre-performance talk filled with insights about the concert you are going to see.  At Sunday Chamber concerts, stay a few minutes after the performance to interact with the artists.

TCU Place
The SSO has called TCU Place home for nearly 50 years – its home to our Masters and Pops Series.

For directions and parking information visit TCU Place website

Knox United Church
838 Spadina Crescent

This beautiful 100 year old church is home to many musical events in Saskatoon, including the SSO’s Baroque Series.
Parking is available in the surrounding pay-lots and limited street parking.

Convocation Hall
107 Administration Pl, University of Saskatchewan

We’re going back to where it all began.  The SSO was founded in 1931 in Convocation Hall.  This intimate recital hall features an exceptional Bechstein piano, warm acoustics, and an undeniable charm.

On Sundays, street parking is free on campus, as are some parking lots that are normal permit only.  On the north side of Convo Hall you’ll find a number of those lots.

Saskatoon is known for its food, and SSO concert goers are in luck as all the best hot spots are located right downtown and in trendy Riversdale…just steps from TCU Place.

Just steps away are favourites like The Hub, The Cactus Club, and 2nd Ave Bar and Grill.  Down 20th you’ll find Picaro, Odd Couple, Seoul Korean, and more.

Out and about downtown you’ll find a wealth of restaurants – Earls, La Cucina, Scarlet, Aroma, Ayden’s, and even a poutinerie!

Be adventurous and see what you find!

Our guest artists are always gushing about the local food scene….who knows, maybe you’ll run in to them!

A night at the symphony can be as elegant or relaxed as you want it to be. Business attire is the norm for orchestral concerts, but anything goes, from jeans to your favorite evening gown. You’ll see slightly more formal attire at Masters Concerts and more casual dress for Pops, so wear whatever suits you!

The SSO is lucky to have a hotel as beautiful as the Holiday Inn Downtown right across the street – indoor parking, a spot to grab coffee, The Hub for food and drink, a swimming pool, a gym, and just steps from the concert.

After you’ve bought your tickets, you can check out our blog the week of a concert for information about the music we’re performing and the guest artists we’re working with.

The night of the concert, doors open an hour before the concert.  Join us in the lobby before Masters Concerts for a pre-concert chat.  There’s always refreshments at our concerts…so bring cash just in case!

Make sure you take time to have a close up look at a beautiful work of art – Bema Autosport’s BMWs are playing some pre-concert music on their incredible sound systems!

Grab a copy of InTune on the way in to take your seat.  Make sure your phone is on silent and put away – no photos or videos are allowed at SSO concerts; we want to ensure that every audience member has the best experience possible, so out of respect for your follow concert goers please keep your phone in your pocket or purse!

InTune has lots of information about the concert and about upcoming concerts, sponsors, and more – there’s also a concert hashtag on the cover to follow along or tag us and be part of the night!

At Masters concerts, typically audiences clap at the end of a work…but sometimes applause breaks out after a movement has been especially moving.  We’re cool with it.

At Pops shows…clap all you want, when you want.  And if you bring that kind of energy with you to the Baroque Series, that’s cool too!

Most of our concerts have intermissions that last 20 minutes.  Take time to refresh your drink, hit the powder room, or purchase the guest artist’s CD at the SSO Boutique!

Just because the concert is done, it doesn’t mean the night is over!  Every once in a while our guest artists will make a stop in the lobby for autographs – and our musicians are always looking to mix and mingle!  If you see a musician from the SSO, don’t be afraid to go say hi!

The After Party takes place at The Hub at the Holiday Inn Downtown – it’s where you’ll find the guest artists, many of our musicians, and Maestro Eric Paetkau.  There’s an After Party after every Masters and Pops so make sure you stop by!

We want you to have an amazing concert experience – if there’s something we’ve missed let us know.

We can’t wait to see you at the SSO!
