Negroni

The SSO’s Tom Brown is joined by mezzo-soprano Julie Nesrallah for this month’s After Dark Gin cocktail!

With Carmen on Tap just around the corner, we’re making a Negroni, a classic Italian cocktail known for its bold, bittersweet flavour. Made with equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth, this cocktail gets a little extra depth from our After Dark Gin, created in partnership with Black Fox Farm & Distillery.

It’s simple to make, and Julie and Tom have a few tips to help you get it just right!

Without further ado, let’s get into our first recipe, the After Dark Intermezzo.

What You’ll Need

  • Rocks glass
  • Ice
  • After Dark gin
  • Campari
  • Sweet vermouth
  • Fresh orange peel
  • Bar spoon
  • Knife or peeler

Ingredients & Measurements

  • 1 oz After Dark gin
  • 1 oz Campari
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • Fresh orange peel for garnish
  • Ice

Recipe

  1. Fill your glass with ice.
  2. Pour in 1 oz of After Dark gin.
  3. Add 1 oz of Campari.
  4. Add 1 oz of sweet vermouth.
  5. Stir gently to combine and chill.
  6. Cut a small strip of orange peel and twist it over the glass to release its oils.
  7. Drop the orange peel into your cocktail and enjoy!

Notes

DOES POURING ORDER MATTER? Not for this cocktail! As Tom and Julie explain, the order of the spirits doesn’t make much difference. Pouring order becomes more important when you’re working with heavier ingredients like syrups or delicate additions like fresh herbs.

TIP FROM TOM: A traditional Negroni calls for equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. If you prefer a stronger gin flavour, you can add a little extra gin to suit your taste!
