Board of Directors

Orchestra board members are the strategic stewards of the organization. They oversee the big picture, ensuring the orchestra’s mission and values are upheld.

Call for Board Members

The Board of the Saskatoon Symphony Society seeks enthusiastic, resourceful, engaged, and forward-thinking members to join its Board of Directors.

Now entering its 96th season, the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is one of the oldest symphonic orchestras in Canada. It is also one of the most innovative and resourceful, garnering a reputation within the industry and artists across Canada and the globe. The SSO is poised and ready for even greater opportunities and achievements as it enters the second phase of its Strategic Plan “Opus 100” in preparation for its 100th Anniversary.

The volunteer Board of Directors provides strategic leadership, governance, establishes policy, exercises stewardship over the operations and financial performance of the SSO, and assesses the Board’s own effectiveness and the effectiveness of its CEO. The Board has a long term contract with its current CEO, ensuring Managerial stability for the organization for at least the next five years.

The SSO is committed to the principles of Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity and Belonging for its musicians, staff and board. As such, we strive to have the face of the board reflect the face of the community at large and we seek to remove barriers to participation in the work of the board.

Following our annual board skills assessment, the board is looking specifically for individuals with the following interests and skill sets:

  • Musical knowledge and/or Music Community Involvement;
  • Human Resources;
  • Capital Projects;
  • Understanding of not for profit finance;
  • Understanding of not for profit organizational roles and responsibilities;
  • Understanding philanthropy and donor relations;
  • Legal knowledge;
  • Community engagement; and
  • Public policy and government relations.

Directors are elected at the AGM of the Society, which is held near the end of September each year. The term of office is three years, renewable consecutively once for a total of six years. To be eligible for election, individuals must meet the Bylaws requirements, which include an annual subscription or donation in an amount of not less than $300.00. If this requirement is prohibitive for an otherwise qualified and successful candidate, the board would consider making alternative arrangements to satisfy the requirements of the Bylaws.

Previous experience on not-for-profit (NFP) boards or managerial experience at the E-VP or C-suite level would be an asset but is not required. In addition to seeking highly qualified individuals, the SSS Board recognizes its obligation to mentor young people, particularly those working towards careers in Arts management or other NFP activities. The SSO Board encourages Directors to engage in all activities of the organization, including its performances, benefit activities, and donor/patron support.

Directors are expected to:

  • prepare for, attend, and participate in six board meetings per year, one of which is a full day Retreat;
  • serve on at least one Board committee (Audit & Finance, CEO Review and Compensation, Governance, Nominating) and participate actively in the work of the committee and its meetings;
  • include the SSO as a top three personal philanthropic priority; and
  • be an active proponent and supporter for the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra.

To apply, please submit:

  • an expression of your interest, and
  • a description of your professional experience which may be in the form of a CV or resume.
